Why Choose a Synthetic For Commercial Carpeting ?

Synthetic carpets are ideal for carpeting an office or workspace but like all carpets synthetics have both advantages and disadvantages that are important to consider when choosing a carpet for commercial settings:

Advantages of Synthetic Carpets:

 Durability and Strength:

Synthetic fibres like nylon and polyester are highly durable and resistant to abrasion, making them suitable for high-traffic areas in commercial settings, this kind of carpeting will reduce the creation of traffic lanes which can be an ongoing problem for workplace carpets

 Stain Resistance:

Most synthetic carpets have excellent stain resistance properties. This is very important in commercial environments where spills and stains are common, no one is careful about the carpet in an office setting

 Colourfastness:

Synthetic fibres are colourfast, meaning they retain their colour and vibrancy for a longer period, even when exposed to sunlight or harsh cleaning chemicals. This can be a serious problem when the office has large windows and receives a great deal of light even when it is not sunny. Not many business premises have UV filters on their windows and as a result the carpet will degrade and the colours fade.

 Moisture and Mildew Resistance:

Carpeting  like olefin/polypropylene and nylon are naturally resistant to moisture and mildew, making them ideal for areas with high humidity or moisture levels. This property is important because leaks from radiators can occur, a slow leak will rot a non synthetic carpet and the damage is almost invisible until it is too late.  A similar situation can arise from the overspill of condensation from large windows during the winter. The condensation leaks on to the carpet and creates invisible damage.

 Cost-Effective:

Synthetic carpets tend to be a lot more affordable than natural fibres like wool, making them a cost-effective choice for commercial carpets.

Disadvantages of Synthetic Fibres:

 Static Electricity:

Some synthetic fibres, particularly olefin/polypropylene, can generate static electricity, which can be a nuisance in certain environments.

 Petroleum-Based:

Most synthetic fibres are derived from non-renewable petroleum resources, which raises environmental concerns.

 Potential for Flattening or Crushing:

Certain synthetic carpets, like olefin/polypropylene, are prone to matting, crushing, or flattening in high-traffic areas, especially if the pile cut is not suitable for the intended use. The pile cut should be very low in such areas of carpeting, long pile is not suitable for high traffic areas in general and should be used only in areas where the footfall is going to be very light and infrequent.
For high traffic areas a looped pile or berber synthetic carpet is robust and will stand up to the high level of footfall because the loop has greater resistance.

 Limited Biodegradability:

Synthetic fibres are not biodegradable, which can contribute to environmental pollution and waste management challenges.

 Potential for Off-Gassing:

Some  synthetic carpets may release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or other chemicals, which can affect indoor air quality, this is particularly noticeable  in newly installed carpets. Over time the off gassing fades but initially the smell can be very difficult for people trying to work or to concentrate with especially in an environment where there is limited fresh air.

When selecting a commercial carpet, it is essential to consider the specific requirements of the intended use area, such as foot traffic, moisture levels, and maintenance needs, and weigh the advantages and disadvantages of synthetic fibres accordingly.
